Numerous aspects of the retro-futuristic film The Electric State are commendable: it features an engaging premise, a talented cast, impressive CGI, and endearing robot characters, all of which, unfortunately, are not fully explored. While the term 'shockingly' may be an exaggeration, it is amusing to play with the title—an element that is largely absent from the film itself.

Directed by the Russo brothers, The Electric State is adapted from the book of the same name by Simon Stålenhag, which envisions a dystopian 1990s where robots and humans engage in conflict after robots gain heightened sentience and seek greater rights. Set against this backdrop, the film follows the journey of orphaned teenager Michelle (Millie Bobby Brown) as she embarks on a perilous mission to locate her younger brother, Christopher, a child prodigy, accompanied by a mysterious robot named Cosmo. They are joined by black-marketeer Keats (Chris Pratt) and his witty robot companion Herman (voiced by Anthony Mackie) as they navigate their adventure, all while being pursued by antagonists intent on eliminating their robotic allies.

Following her portrayal of a special child in need of friends to rescue her and the world in Stranger Things, it was a refreshing change for Millie Bobby Brown to assume the role of the savior of that special child. Stanley Tucci takes on the role of the main antagonist, Ethan Skate, a billionaire entrepreneur who secures a patent for an innovative technology that enables humans to inhabit and control robotic bodies, allowing them to exist in two places simultaneously. This technology plays a crucial role in defeating the robots during the war and facilitating a peace treaty that prohibits humans from harboring robots. Woody Harrelson lends his voice to Mr. Peanut, the leader of the robots, while Giancarlo Esposito portrays 'The Marshall,' an anti-AI figure renowned for his ruthless destruction of numerous robots during the conflict. Ke Huy Quan makes a brief appearance as Dr. Amherst, a character whose insights are vital for locating Michelle’s brother, though his role feels underutilized.
